Pre-Primary

The faculty would like to welcome new students and families to the Crossroads Academy Pre-Primary Program. We are happy and excited about the upcoming school year.

Crossroads Academy Pre-Primary Program believes that children learn through play and exploration of their environment, and are entitled to opportunities that support all areas of development. Crossroads Academy Pre-Primary Program believes in fostering active learning, multiculturalism, integration, creativity, independence, and parent involvement by providing experiences for positive interactions between children, staff, parents, school, and the community.

Recognizing that the pre-primary age group is at a distinct stage of learning, and in order to make this important year a positive and successful experience, Crossroads Academy looks at each individual applicant for readiness to join our program.

Crossroads Academy has chosen the Foundation Stage of the UK National Curriculum upon which to base the Pre-Primary Curriculum. The Foundation Stage is organized into six areas of development. The following is a brief description of the six areas:

Personal, social and emotional development-

Children will engage in activities which will help them to be self-confident, take an interest in things, know what their own needs are, tell the difference between right and wrong, and be able to dress and undress.

Communication, language and literacy -

Children will engage in activities which will help them talk confidently and clearly, enjoying stories, songs and poems, hearing and saying sounds, and linking them to the alphabet. They will be encouraged to read and write some familiar words and learn to use a pencil.

Mathematical development -

Children will engage in activities which will help develop an understanding of math through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. They will become comfortable with numbers and with ideas such as "heavier than" or "bigger". They will be aware of shapes and space.

Knowledge and understanding of the world-

Your child will explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it. They will build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for. They will find out about past events in their lives and their families' lives. They will find out about different cultures and beliefs.

Physical development-

Children will engage in activities which will help them learn to move confidently, controlling their body and handling equipment.

Creative development-

Your child will explore colours and shapes, trying out dance, making things, telling stories and making music.
