Hockey Academy

 

Crossroads Academy offers a curriculum which meets and exceeds the Nova Scotia Department of Education standards. The following is a brief description of the subjects included in our academic program.

Language Arts: The focus of the L.A. program is to teach the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The Crossroads methodology includes an individualized reading program, a spelling program and comprehensive instruction in phonics and grammar.

Mathematics: Our mathematics program emphasizes the development of the essential basic skills through concrete learning experiences as well as the practical application of the skills learned. In the upper grades students may work independently, progressing at their own rate.

Social Studies, Health & Science: The social studies program focusses on Canadian geography and history, Health and science programs cover skills in these areas through experimental activities appropriate to each. The children participate in many hands-on activities in both areas from grade primary to six. The programs also make good use of the diverse natural setting of the school.

Music: The music program is designed to develop skills, rhythm, harmony and performance. The program incorporates the use of various musical instruments from grade primary and progresses to band instruments at grade six. An extra-curricular musical Chior is offered to students grade three through six.

Physical Education: Our school is equipped with a gymnasium, which allows us to offer a phys. ed. program with both indoor and outdoor activities four times per week. Our program encourages the development of gross motor skills through various movement activities, both individual and cooperative. Crossroads Academy also offers a  multi- week swimming program, a hockey skills program as well as an after-school Running Club.

French: Our French program gives our students an introduction to the French language. Our French program is offered in grades primary through six. The primary program begins with emphasis on oral language, progressing to written language through grade six.

Art:  Our Art program exposes our students to hands-on artistic activities. Our program is guaged to the grade level and uses a variety of media.
